two monkeys holding some homemade monkey bread between them

I know these two monkeys and they wanted some bread so here we go. This is a fun Monkey Bread recipe for the kids to do with some assistance. It can also be a great lesson on fractions with measuring cups and the cutting of the biscuits. I got the recipe from one of my favorite websites https://allrecipes.com

Ingredients For the Monkey Bread
  • 2 Grands or 3 regular (12oz) BISCUITS
  • 2 teaspoons CINNAMON
  • 1 cup of SUGAR
  • 1/2 cup BUTTER (same as one stick)
  • 1 cup packed BROWN SUGAR

Preheat the Oven to 350 degrees

Grease 9 x 9 pan very well. If you do not have cooking spray just run a stick of butter all around it including the sides like you are coloring the pan with a huge marker.

Get a teaspoon, which is the smaller of the two spoons in a set. Note: It takes 3 of the smaller spoons (tsp) to make 1 of the larger (tbsp). It might not always look like it, but test it out with water.

Put 2 teaspoons of cinnamon in a large sealable bag

Add 1 cup of sugar to the same bag with the cinnamon. It’s ok if it’s a little less than a cup.

Mix the two ingredients together a little and set the bag aside.

Now open a can of biscuits. You will need a total of 2 Grands biscuits, like in the picture, or 3 of the smaller cans of biscuits.

Lay out each biscuit on a cutting board and cut into 4 equal pieces. You can also do 6 equal pieces if you want smaller bites in the end.

Put the slices in the bag with the cinnamon and sugar. We cut 6 biscuits at a time to add to the bag. Do not try to add all the biscuits in the bag at once.

MATH LESSON: You can cut them into 6 pieces but try to make them about the same size so they bake evenly.

This example does NOT represent 1/6 (sixths) because they are not EVEN sized slices. The slices have to be the same size in order to create any fraction.

NOW FOR THE FUN PART! Close the bag tightly by sealing it up and shake it well so that each biscuit piece is covered in the sugar and cinnamon mixture.
Two Monkeys and Some Bread: Making Monkey Bread
When they are coated, reach in the bag and remove the pieces and put them in the greased pan.
Two Monkeys and Some Bread: Making Monkey Bread
Repeat the process of cutting and shaking until you have finished coating all the biscuits with the sugar and cinnamon and putting them in the pan.

Now for the sauce!
Add 1/2 cup of butter (equal to one stick) and 1 cup of brown sugar to a sauce pan.

When measuring the brown sugar make sure you are packing it in the measuring cup so that you fill it up all the way.
Two Monkeys and Some Bread: Making Monkey Bread
Melt the butter and brown sugar on medium heat and then let it come to a boil for 2 minutes. STIR THE WHOLE TIME.
Two Monkeys and Some Bread: Making Monkey Bread
Pour the sauce on the biscuits and put it in the preheated oven.

If you forgot the first step and the oven is not on, let it heat up to 350 degrees before you put in the monkey bread.
Two Monkeys and Some Bread: Making Monkey Bread
Set your timer for 35 minutes.
Two Monkeys and Some Bread: Making Monkey Bread
You will see the Monkey Bread rising in the oven, but try to keep the oven door closed to keep in the heat.
Two Monkeys and Some Bread: Making Monkey Bread
After your timer goes off, remove your monkey bread and DO NOT FORGET TO TURN OFF YOUR OVEN.

This is the hard part….let it cool for about 10 minutes.
Two Monkeys and Some Bread: Making Monkey Bread
You know it is done when you can remove a knife from the middle and you can see the separation of the biscuits a little. It will still be slightly doughy looking because it is so moist and buttery.
Two Monkeys and Some Bread: Making Monkey Bread
After it cools some you will want to flip it to serve. This will get the ooey-gooey goodness on the top of your bread, not in the bottom of your pan. You do not need to try to flip quickly. Instead place a baking sheet over the pan and them flip them both so there is no mess. It’s like holding a closed book in your hands and turning it over to the back.

Once it’s flipped, tap the top and see if it comes out.
Two Monkeys and Some Bread: Making Monkey Bread
If it does not come out all the way we know to spray the pan more at the beginning. But it does not hurt this monkey. Just scrape the bread out of the pan. I promise it tastes the same!
